The alleged irregularities in the Indian Premier League (IPL) T-20 tournament rocked the Rajya Sabha on Friday with the Opposition forcing adjournment of the House for the day demanding a Joint Parliamentary Committee probe into the IPL controversy.

Soon after the presentation of the reports of various committees after question hour, a determined Opposition members including those from BJP, Left parties, Samajwadi Party, Akali Dal, Shiv Sena, AIADMK and others were on their feet alleging wrongdoing and financial irregularities into the functioning of the IPL.

All efforts by Deputy Chairman K. Rehman Khan to restore order did not bear fruit as the members raised slogans in support of their demand. Mr. Khan adjourned the House till 2.30 p.m.

Soon after when the House reassembled, it witnessed similar scenes of slogan-shouting and strong demands for setting up of a JPC. Some BJP members rushed to the well and shouted slogans against the government to press their demand.

The Congress members said that discussing BPL was more important than discussing IPL as it concerned the people and countered the demand for JPC. “We have demanded for a JPC probe. We want to know what is happening in IPL,'' S.S. Ahluwalia (BJP) said.

Congress members B.K. Hariprasad and Rashid Alvi were on their feet demanding that a discussion on BPL was more important.

As the Opposition members insisted on their demand and shouted slogans, Mr. Khan adjourned the House for the day.
