Security has been intensified at all major establishments of the Railways and a high alert sounded after a letter allegedly written by the CPI(Maoist) threatened to blow up the Rail Bhawan, headquarters of the Railways.

Soon after receiving the letter, Railway Board Chairman S.S. Khurana to whom it was addressed, instructed the Railway Protection Force to heighten security.

He also informed the Union Home Ministry, which directed the Railways to step up security in all important establishments.

Even the Delhi police have been informed.

The letter purporting to be from the CPI(Maoist), which has been targeting railway property during its bandhs, threatened not only to blow up the Rail Bhawan located near Parliament but also the Baroda House located near the India Gate.

Sources said the letter alleged that the staff members running the trains such as engine drivers and gangmen were being paid pittance, while corruption was rampant at the higher levels. It demanded that the salaries and allowances of the staff be raised.

The authenticity of the letter was under verification, the sources said, without ruling out a prank.
