Rahul Gandhi files nomination for Congress president post

Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi on Monday filed his nomination for the party president’s post. A host of senior members of the organisation, including former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, were present at the event at the party headquarters in Delhi.

Actor Shashi Kapoor passes away

Veteran actor Shashi Kapoor passed away at the Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital, Mumbai, on Monday evening. He was 79. “Mr. Shashi Kapoor expired at 5.20 pm on 4th December at Kokilaben Hospital in Mumbai,” confirmed Dr. Ram Narain, executive director of the hospital.

Low pressure over Bay of Bengal likely to become depression, move towards TN, AP: IMD

A well-marked low pressure area over southeast Bay of Bengal is likely to become a depression and move towards Tamil Nadu and  Andhra Pradesh  by December 6, the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) said on Monday. The Director of Area Cyclone Warning Centre, S Balachandran, said the system was likely to turn into a depression in the next 24 hours.

Delhi’s air quality dips further

A day after  Sri Lankan cricketers took to the field wearing anti-pollution masks , Delhi’s air turned fouler on Monday with a sharp rise in the level of particulates since morning. The concentration of the most dominant pollutants, PM2.5 and PM10, reached levels as high as 276 and 455 micrograms per cubic metre by 3 p.m., according to the Central Control Room for Air Quality Management of the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).

Naval ship traces 9 missing Kerala fishermen off Lakshadweep

A Navy ship on Monday located a fishing boat with nine crew members, reportedly missing from Kochi for the last 15 days, off  Lakshadweep,  a defence spokesman in Kochi said. The boat, Island Queen, was located by INS Kolkata 132 nautical miles north of Kavaratti in Lakshadweep.They have been provided with food and water. “All of them are safe.. They are coming on their own boat to Kochi,” he said.

Death penalty for rape of girls aged 12 and below: MP Assembly passes Bill

The  Madhya Pradesh  Assembly on Monday unanimously passed a Bill awarding death to those found guilty of raping girls aged 12 and below. With the passage of the Bill, Madhya Pradesh becomes the first state in the country where those convicted of such rapes will face the gallows.

21st century India cannot shun leprosy patients, says Supreme Court

Twenty-first century society cannot justify shunning persons affected by leprosy or keeping them hidden in homes and away from the mainstream, the Supreme Court declared in an order on Monday. The court asked the Centre to respond in eight weeks to a call to repeal 119 Central and State laws in practice since the 1950s that discriminate against leprosy patients, stigmatise and isolate them despite the fact that modern medicine completely cures the disease.

Navy Day: Here’s a quick look at the Indian Navy today

The Indian Navy Day is celebrated on December 4 every year to commemorate Operation Trident, an attack on the Karachi harbour during the Indo-Pakistan war in 1971. The Indian Navy outperformed Pakistan's troops with zero casualties on its side. Anti-ship missiles were first used by India during this operation.
