The Union government on Thursday ordered an enquiry into alleged fraud in the payment of wages under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) at Kotda village in Kotiyana district of Gujarat.

Union Minister for Rural Development C.P. Joshi said a national level monitor would investigate the allegations and submit a report by November 30.

The allegation was that NRIs, government officials, doctors, teachers and well-off farmers were beneficiaries of the payments made under the MGNREGA.

For the past three years, these persons were drawing wages as manual labourers and the outgo was almost to the tune of Rs. 1 crore.
