Three persons, including a PAC jawan, were killed and nine injured near Aligarh on Saturday night when farmers fought pitched battles with the police who opened fire to restore calm. On Sunday the Uttar Pradesh government ordered a judicial probe into the violence.

Aligarh District Magistrate Rama Rao and SSP Vijay Prakash have been transferred. The violence broke out at Jikarpur village when farmers, demanding higher compensation for land acquired for a township, went on the rampage and vandalised a police post.
