Privacy no excuse for tax non-compliance: Jaitley

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Monday exhorted tax officials to expand the tax base in a non-intrusive manner while keeping in mind that privacy could not become an excuse for tax non-compliance.

The Minister was speaking at a function commemorating Income-Tax Day.

"The Finance Minister exhorted the officers of the Income-Tax Department (ITD) to be prompt in redressing the grievances of the tax payers, expand the tax base in a non-intrusive manner even as they strive to achieve the revenue generation targets,” an official release said.

“He said that gradually, the mindset of the people is changing as they want no one should be exempt from tax,” the press release added.

“He said that privacy cannot be made an excuse for non-compliance.”
