President, Prime Minister pay tributes to Indira Gandhi

President Pratibha Patil and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Sunday paid homage to former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on her 26th death anniversary at her samadhi at ‘Shakti Shthal’ here.

Vice President M. Hamid Ansari, Congress president and NAC Chairperson Sonia Gandhi, party General Secretary Rahul Gandhi and Speaker Meira Kumar also paid floral tributes at Shakti Sthal.

Devotional songs were played as the leaders assembled at seating area at the Sthal after paying their tributes to the late leader who was assassinated by her bodyguards on October 31, 1984.

Rich tributes were also paid to the former Prime Minister in Mumbai and in Chennai.

Former Union Home Minister and ‘Iron Man of India’ Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel was also remembered on his 135th birthday anniversary in Delhi and in Mumbai.

In Delhi, the Prime Minister paid floral tributes at the portrait of Patel at the Central Hall of Parliament House.

The Lok Sabha Speaker along with several union ministers and members of Parliament were also present.

At the state secretariat in Mumbai, Congress president Kripashankar Singh and Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) chief Manikrao Thakre led the party in paying homage to the leaders at their respective party offices.

In Chennai, senior Congress leaders, including TNCC President Thankgabalu, paid homage to Gandhi at the party office.

At the NCP office, office bearers organised a function in memory of the two leaders and offered floral tributes.
