Bar Council of India (BCI) member S. Prabakaran, who represents Tamil Nadu, has been nominated as the council’s co-chairman.

Mr. Prabakaran is a member of various committees set up by the BCI, including the legal education panel; legal aid panel; and overseas and rule making committees. He is the council’s spokesperson and also a member of the Academic and General Councils of the National Law School, Bangalore.

Speaking to The Hindu , Mr. Prabakaran said his first priority would be to oppose the National Judicial Appointments Commission Bill, which was taken up for discussion in the Rajya Sabha on Thursday.

He regretted that Law Minister Kapil Sibal had rushed through the Bill without holding any effective consultation with members of the Bar or the BCI. The BCI would soon meet to decide on the future course of action.
