The placement season at the Indian Institute of Management, Calcutta (IIM-C) has started on a positive note this year as compared to 2008 when the global recession had impacted the placement at the elite institution, IIM-C authorities claimed on Tuesday.

According to a press release issued by the placement cell of the IIM-C, lateral placements are underway since the first week of January and visiting firms have offered more than 100 job offers till last week.

The highest package offered so far by a domestic company is over Rs. 20 lakh per annum and the IIM-C authorities claimed that more than one such offer was made. The companies that have visited so far include Cognizant Business Consulting, Delloitte, Hinduja Group, Aditya Birla Group, Accenture Business Consulting, Mahindra & Mahindra, Virtusa, Essar and Bristlecone and the institution authorities said that the number of visiting companies have doubled since last year.

An IIM-C source said Cognizant Business Consulting made the highest number of offers so far running to double digits.

The statement, however, admitted that the current year’s placements are yet to match up with the pre-recession numbers and that the mood in the campus is of “guarded optimism.”

The lateral placements are taken by final-year students having a work experience of more than 10 months.
