Amid the controversy over the cap on subsidised LPG cylinders, Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar on Thursday raised the issue at a Cabinet meeting and sought clarity, prompting Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to ask Petroleum Minister Jaipal Reddy to address the questions raised.
Mr. Pawar raised the matter towards the end of the Cabinet meeting, informed sources said.
He wanted to know the cut-off dates for the implementation of the September 14 decision to cap subsidised LPG cylinders at six a connection annually, they said.
Mr. Pawar’s contention was that many families may have already used their quota of six cylinders when the decision to cap the subsidy was announced, the sources said.
He also wanted to know how the decision would apply to housing societies that have a common connection, they said. Mr. Pawar also sought to know the steps being planned by the government to check the illegal sale of cooking gas.
Dr. Singh is learnt to have asked the Petroleum Minister to address the issues raised by Mr. Pawar.
