Members of the Congress, the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Samajwadi Party on Tuesday expressed concern over the situation in Bareilly in Uttar Pradesh and demanded a probe into the incidents of violence during the last few days.

They charged the Mayawati government with being indifferent to the plight of the people.

Raising the issue during zero hour in the Rajya Sabha, Ramgopal Yadav (SP) demanded the Centre's intervention for the restoration of normality in Bareilly, which has been under curfew for a fortnight following communal tension.

He was joined by the Congress and BJP members who sought a probe into the incidents there.

Rashid Alvi (Congress) said the situation there was very serious. He said he was prevented from visiting the troubled city and was arrested at Ghaziabad on Tuesday.
