The plight of a woman cleaning worker on the premises of Parliament who has been trying to register a sexual harassment complaint against her supervisor came up for mention in both Houses on Wednesday.

>The story was reported by The Hindu on Wednesday. The woman, employed as a cleaner with a private housekeeping company which has been given the contract for work in Parliament, said she had been repeatedly harassed by her supervisor.

But she has not been directed to the Lok Sabha’s Internal Complaints Committee, and the company has not taken any action.

DMK MP Kanimozhi raised the issue in the Rajya Sabha, saying it was a serious matter that a woman working in the halls of Parliament was not able to get any help. She was supported by CPI(M) MPs T.N. Seema and Sitaram Yechury, who waved a copy of the newspaper.

As a special case, Chairman P.J. Kurien allowed for a special mention notice to be submitted.

In the Lok Sabha, CPI(M) MP A. Sampath raised the issue, saying that such incidents were not good for the reputation of Parliament. Parliamentary Affairs Minister M. Venkaiah Naidu sought information about the complaint from the Lok Sabha Secretariat, according to his office.
