Both the Houses of Parliament were adjourned on Friday after news came in about the demise of former Prime Minister I.K. Gujral.

Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde made the announcement in both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha that Mr. Gujral (92) passed away in Medanta Hospital in Gurgaon at 3.31 pm after a multiple-organ failure.

After the announcement, the two Houses adjourned for the day as a mark of respect to the departed leader.

Mr. Shinde made the announcement in the Lok Sabha when Arjun Ram Meghwal (BJP) was deliberating on a private member resolution seeking an action plan to rehabilitate persons displaced from Pakistan.

Mr. Meghwal had introduced the resolution on August 17 in the House during the Monsoon session.

Mr. Shinde made the announcement in Rajya Sabha immediately after withdrawal of a private member’s resolution seeking electoral reforms and transparency in political funding.

The resolution was moved by Bhupender Yadav (BJP) on which Law Minister Ashwani Kumar had just finished his reply.
