The allegation that students of Jawaharlal Nehru University who were facing disciplinary action after they were found guilty by the university's high-level enquiry committee were not being allowed to register for the new semester was denied by Rector of Jawaharlal Nehru University Chintamani Mahapatra.
He said on Thursday that there was no such blocking and all registrations were being accepted.
According to the students a handwritten note written by Registrar Pramod Kumar on July 18 was sent to all the departments barring these students from registering. If implemented, it would mean that the students on the list would lose their seat at the University.
However, JNUSU Secretary Rama Naga said that unless something was given in writing, the university administration was not willing to accept their registration.
“Verbal communication does not end our problem as until a new notice is put up stating that the students can be registered and the registration is not blocked until further notice, various departments at the university are not accepting our registration.”
Vice-president of JNUSU Shehla Rashid lashed out at the University administration in a public post and called students to participate in a protest demo on July 22 to stand united and “defend every inch of democratic space against the JNU administration’s designs to dehumanise our campus.”
She called for a stop to discriminatory attitude towards Ph.D. scholars and resist the attempts to throw out provisional Ph.D. students. She also accused the authorities of trying to show the new students that there was no hostel crisis by handing out eviction notices.
