Metro promises a visual treat for commuters

May 09, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 08:22 am IST - NEW DELHI:

Metro stations coming up in the Capital will give the commuters the feel of an art gallery.

The Delhi Metro has decided to install artworks in most of the stations coming up under the ring-like Majlis Park-Shiv Vihar corridor. This stretch connects almost all sides of the city and terminates at North and East Delhi respectively.

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has already floated an expression of interest seeking proposals from artists.

“For the first time, designs have been sought on such a huge scale. The response has been quite good as we have received 629 submissions. About 50 artists have shown interest with various proposals. Now we are in process of finalising the designs,” a metro official said, promising a visual treat for commuters.

“Line 7 is going to be the longest metro network in the country, which means it will have the maximum passenger interface. So we are focusing on making it more alluring. All underground stations on this corridor will have attractive glass panels,” the official said.

Twelve stations — Azadpur, Shalimar Bagh, Netaji Subhash Place, Naraina Vihar, Bhikaji Cama Place, Sarojini Nagar, INA, South Extension, Lajpat Nagar, Vinobapuri, Ashram and Hazrat Nizamuddin — will be decked up with art panels.

“The interiors at these stations will be made up of screen-printed glass panels with stainless steel sandwich panels. The designs, paintings and photographs will be printed on toughened glass panels, while artworks will be laminated for durability,” the official explained.

These fire-proof panels may later be used for advertising.

While the DMRC will bear the expenses of screen-printing on glass and fixing it, the selected artists will not receive any remuneration for their work.

“They will, however, be allowed to incorporate their name as part of the artwork, which will be displayed permanently at the metro stations.”
