Several artists, many of whom are affiliated to various people’s movements in Maharashtra, have come together to form a cultural platform seeking to strip art of its seemingly apolitical character and start a debate on its role in today’s society and political culture.
‘Yalgaar,’ formed about 10 months ago, is set to conduct its first cultural convention of sorts that will see local artists from several disciplines converge to perform and deliberate at Pune’s Shanivarwada on May 30 and 31.
“Many a time artists say that they are apolitical, but artists should take a stand about what they are doing through art and understand the culture of politics. Art too has a politics. We have had many literature and theatre fests. Our programme, on the other hand, brings together various art forms under one roof to further a cultural movement,” Dhammaraksit Randive, poet and theatre person, told The Hindu .
