Opposition wave is media creation: Pawar

‘Regional parties expected to play decisive role in general election’

January 25, 2014 02:29 am | Updated May 13, 2016 12:12 pm IST - MUMBAI:

Nationalist Congress Party president and Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar on Friday said that while the political scenario in the country was unclear, he did not see any Opposition wave as was projected in the media.

Regional parties and new voters were expected to play a decisive role in the coming Lok Sabha polls, he told a press conference after filing his nomination here for the Rajya Sabha election from Maharashtra.

“I do not see an Opposition wave in the country. I did not see any reflection of it in the two recent municipal council and zilla parishad polls in Maharashtra. Or in the district of Nandurbar, which is close to Gujarat.”

Mr. Pawar was dismissive of poll surveys which showed an anti-incumbency wave. “In 2004, poll surveys predicted that the NDA would return to power with its India Shining campaign. But instead Dr. Manmohan Singh became Prime Minister for the next ten years.”
