More than a quarter of the approximately 6700 Lok Sabha candidates nationwide (from Phase 1 to 7) are crorepatis, with average assets being Rs 4.47 crore per candidate , finds a new analysis of affidavits by National Election Watch and Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR).
An analysis of criminal and financial backgrounds of 6672 contesting candidates (out of a total of 6727), finds that 26 per cent (or 1766) are crorepatis.
No less than 82 per cent of Congress candidates are crorepatis, with an average asset per candidate being 35.32 crore in the party, according to the analysis released on the ADR website on Thursday.
In the BJP, 74 per cent of candidates have declared assets worth over Rs. 1 crore, while their average assets are Rs. 10.36 crore.
