The Opposition in Parliament demanded on Friday that the government table the V.K. Shunglu Committee's report on the alleged irregularities in the Commonwealth Games. It protested when the government did not meet the demand.
The Bharatiya Janata Party demanded the resignation of Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit and action against Lt. Governor Tejendra Khanna and officials of the Delhi Development Authority, alleging that they were indicted by the committee.
In the Lok Sabha, the BJP-led NDA staged a walkout, while in the Rajya Sabha, it forced an adjournment.
In the Lok Sabha, BJP leader L.K. Advani demanded that the government table the report forthwith and follow it up with a discussion, as Friday happened to be the last day of the budget session. Stressing that the Prime Minister himself had set up the committee, he said it was necessary to address the public concern over matters of corruption.
As Basudeb Acharia of the CPI(M) and Leader of the Opposition Sushma Swaraj wanted a response from the Leader of the House, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal said the government had to go through the report and take a decision. He assured the House that action would be taken wherever necessary. Dissatisfied with the response, Ms. Swaraj led the NDA members in a walkout.
In the Rajya Sabha, Venkaiah Naidu of the BJP demanded action against Ms. Dikshit and Mr. Khanna and DDA officials. As the BJP members sought to rush to the well, the Chair adjourned the House.
