If the triple talaq bill was passed into a law in its present form, Muslim women would become victims of ‘double torture’ and it would do them more harm than good, Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati said on Friday.
Ms. Mayawati, whose party was among those demanding that the Bill be sent to a select power committee, said the draft was fraught with "serious drawbacks and faults."
Parties not consulted
The former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister criticised the Narendra Modi government for failing to consult other parties before drafting the bill criminalising the practice of triple talaq.
IThat the BJP did not consult Opposition parties was “”not a mere lapse,’’ but reflects its “ill-intention”," Ms. Mayawati said alleging that the Narendra Modi from government wanted to convert the issue into a "Hindu-Muslim" one for electoral benefits.
Ms. Mayawati said that while her party was in favour of a law against triple talaq, she was against certain provisions of criminalisation which would create more hardship for Muslim women and make them prone to exploitation.
‘Undemocratic’
She said the Modi government's stand on the bill was “stubborn and undemocratic’’
"If its intentions were not political, the Modi government would not adopt a stance of stubbornness and would have sent the Bill to the power committee for a better draft. The time of Parliament also would not have been wasted that way,’ Ms. Mayawati said here in an official statement.
