Bharatiya Janata Party MP Meenakshi Lekhi on Thursday defended a demand of the Vice-Chancellor of Jawaharlal Nehru University, Jagdish Chandra, that a battle tank be stationed on the campus to inculcate patriotism in students.

During Zero Hour in the Lok Sabha, Ms. Lekhi said the students must be made to take an oath to “protect the country’s pride”.

“It is very unfortunate. A controversy is being created following the Vice-Chancellor’s views. The JNU is run using taxpayer money. Anti-India slogans were raised inside the campus. It is an insult to those protecting the border,” Ms. Lekhi said.

The MP further said that there was “nothing unseemly” about what the Vice-Chancellor had demanded.
