M.P. health director suspended after Lokayukta raid

The Madhya Pradesh government suspended health director A.N. Mittal after the Lokayukta recovered huge amounts of undisclosed cash and jewellery from his residence here on Thursday.

In searches conducted at Mr. Mittal's Shantiniketan residence in Bhopal, the Lokayukta recovered Rs. 38 lakh in cash besides jewellery worth Rs. 72 lakh. The Lokayukta also found land ownership documents and foreign currency — €3000 and 1,080 Australian dollars — from the officer's residence. Lokayukta officials said the value of Mr. Mittal's land at Bhopal was nearly Rs. 50 crore. They also found documents pertaining to partnership in a hotel, a huge bungalow, three shops and a large showroom.

Searches were also conducted simultaneously at the residence of Mr. Mittal's subordinate G.P. Kirar, who is Junior Auditor in the Health Department.

From Mr. Kirar's residence, the Lokayukta recovered Rs.10 lakh in cash, besides documents relating to immovable properties in Bhopal, including two shops and 28 acres of land.
