The flood situation in many places across the country remained grim, with Assam recording four more deaths on Tuesday, taking the toll to 69.
Nearly nine lakh people remained affected in 16 districts. Flood waters claimed a life in Dhemaji, while three others were washed away in Dhubri district, the Assam State Disaster Management Authority said. Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and apprised him about the situation.
In Himachal Pradesh, rain disrupted normal life in many parts of the state severing road links in Kangra district. A five-month-old child died in a landslide.
In Mumbai, the second successive day of heavy rainfall saw overflowing lakes, treefalls, short circuits galore, and minor traffic snarls. Private forecaster Skymet reported that in a span of 24 hours from 8.30 a.m. on Monday, Mumbai recorded 163.4 mm of rain at its Santacruz observatory. Rains also delayed several trains. Services between Mumbai and Ahmedabad were hit with tracks submerged owing to the heavy rain at Vapi and Valsad, with several express and passenger trains cancelled.
In Gujarat, five people died in lightning strikes in three incidents, four in Ahmedabad district and one in Morbi district, bringing the rain-related death toll in the state to 65 since June 1, and 21 since July 14. Heavy rain in Valsad and Navsari in the southern part of the state led to 50 roads, including five State highways, being closed, and cancelled trains. Reservoirs and rivers are swelling due to heavy rains in catchment areas. Ahmedabad also saw heavy rains on Tuesday morning.
On India’s east coast, the forecast of depression in the Bay of Bengal and resulting further heavy rain has put administrations on the alert.
In Andhra Pradesh, fishing activity came to halt. The Cyclone Warning Centre has advised fisherfolk to not venture into the sea till Wednesday. The East Godavari district administration has focussed on the Agency areas, with arrangements in place for relief and rehabilitation. In Vizianagaram district, flood damage is being assessed, with crops like paddy, banana, oil palm, and cocoa being affected.
Hyderabad also saw its second consecutive day of heavy rain. Complaints of water-logging and flood kept civic officials busy.
