Modi distorted my statement: Chidambaram

December 02, 2013 11:09 pm | Updated November 16, 2021 06:13 pm IST - NEW DELHI:

Union Finance Minister P. Chidambaram on Monday stood by his comments against BJP’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi and accused him of distorting his statement.

“My statement was that buying gold, mostly imported, worsened the Current Account Deficit (CAD). Whether buying gold caused ‘economic crisis’ or ‘inflation’ [reported in the media]… it does not make any difference. Either version is a distortion of my statement, which referred to the CAD. He [Mr. Modi] should also clarify whether he agrees with my statement that large imports of gold worsened the CAD,” the Minister said.
