Modi, Mamata declare Rs. 6 lakh relief

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced a compensation of Rs. 2 lakh each to the families of those killed in the landslides in West Bengal’s Darjeeling district.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced Rs. 4 lakh each to the kin of the dead and Rs. 1.25 lakh each to the injured. She promised all assistance to the affected people.

“Money can never compensate the loss of life. However, the State government has decided to pay Rs. 4 lakh to the kin of those who have died and Rs. 1.25 lakh to the injured. The government will provide all kinds of assistance for the rehabilitation of those affected,” Ms. Banerjee said at Bahrampur in Murshidabad district.

“The Home Secretary has already reached there. I am rushing to the area.”

5,000 people hit

In Jalpaiguri district, at least 5,000 people were affected by waterlogging and their misery was compounded by the release of water from the Teesta barrage at the rate of over 5,000 cusecs.

The district administration has issued a red alert as the water in the Teesta and the Torsa rivers has touched the danger mark.
