The Aam Aadmi Party has contacted noted activist Medha Patkar to join the party. Ms. Patkar, who is a convener of the National Alliance of People’s Movements and leads the Narmada Bachao Andolan for the rights of the people displaced by the Sardar Sarovar Project, is reported to have responded “positively.”
Member of the National Election Committee of AAP Yogendra Yadav told The Hindu that he had met Ms. Patkar here on Wednesday and requested her to join the party. “She was positive,” he said.
Ms. Patkar confirmed to The Hindu that AAP had contacted her to join the party. The NBA leader wields considerable influence in the tribal and rural belt of Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat. As convener of NAPM — a conglomeration of several NGOs — too she has led several movements on land and water issues.
