Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister and Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati on Thursday sought to take her battle into the enemy camps by raising issues of corruption, inflation and poor compensation for land acquisition and threatening to gherao Parliament during its monsoon session.
Ms. Mayawati targeted both the Congress and BJP, particularly on the issue of the plight of farmers, in view of the Uttar Pradesh Assembly and MCD elections next year. She addressed a closed door meeting of her workers here on Thursday.
“Poor compensation”
She described the Congress as the “mother of corruption” in the country and said farmers in the Congress-ruled States such as Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan and Maharashtra were being paid poor compensation for the land being acquired from them. She charged that the Central government was aware of the ill-treatment being meted out to farmers in Delhi.
Similarly BJP governments in Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh were equally harsh on the farmers in their States while acquiring land from them, she charged.
Ms. Mayawati was countering the campaign that the Congress and the BJP had launched in Uttar Pradesh in the wake of the violence in Greater Noida over the land acquisition row.
Land acquisition Bill
She asked her workers to be prepared to stage a gherao of Parliament during the monsoon session to press for an amended land acquisition bill. She also exhorted them to gear up for a long-drawn political battle to silence the Congress and the BJP who had launched a ‘sinister' campaign against her government.
