A massive fire broke out in the state-of-the-art hydrocracker unit of Numaligarh refinery in upper Assam's Golaghat district on Saturday night following an explosion. The Paresh Barua-led faction of the United Liberation Front of Asom claimed responsibility.

The incident coincided with the observance of the raising day by both factions of the ULFA.

However, the police said the refinery authorities believe it to be an industrial accident.

Explosion

DGP Jayanto Narayan Choudhury told The Hindu that fire broke out at the hydrocracker unit at 6.30 pm. However, there was no casualty.

“There was an explosion. Refinery officials believe it to be industrial accident,” the DGP added.

A senior NRL official said an explosion preceding the blast was reported. “The fire broke out at the hydrocracker unit which is an automated unit. There was no casualty. Fire has been brought under control. Right now the focus is on fire fighting.”

In a statement e-mailed to a section of media, the Paresh Barua-led faction of the ULFA claimed responsibility for the attack and claimed it used Magnetic Time Device to trigger the blast.
