The body of a man shot dead by suspected Maoists was recovered from the Jangalmahal area in West Bengal's Paschim Medinipur district on Sunday.
Umakant Mahato worked for the Forest Department on a temporary basis. He was found dead on the highway near Pirakata, Pravin Tripathi, Superintendent of Police, Jhargram, told The Hindu over telephone.
He was not an active member of any political party. Posters claiming that he was a police informer were found near his body, Mr. Tripathi said.
Two activists of the Maoist-backed Police Santrash Birodhi Janasadharaner Committee (PSBJC), who were arrested on Saturday, were produced in the court of the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate at Jhargram.
They were residents of Jarulia and arrested during a search operation, Mr. Tripathi said. “Sujit Mahato and Sujoy Mahato have direct connections with the Maoists.”
Four suspected Maoists were also produced in a court in the Maoist-affected Bankura district on Sunday.
They were arrested for an attack on the home of a local leader of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), Nabin Hemram. They had stormed into Mr. Hemram's home and set it on fire. Mr. Hemram's sister and mother were killed in the incident, Superintendent of Police Vishal Garg said.
