WannaCry ransomeware virus attack continues to be reported from Odisha with two government medical institutions and one individual informing their computer systems being hacked on Saturday.
The cyber attack was reported from sickle cell unit of the VSS Medical College Hospital in Sambalpur district where one computer used for administrative work went blank. Patient care has, however, not been affected.
“Some of the file could not be opened on May 16. Apprehending that it could be due to the virus, we tried an anti-virus software, but failed. Next day, (May 17), we contacted Quick Heal company, an anti-virus software provider. Some files could be retrieved while many could not be accessed,” said Bijayananda Nayak, senior manager, Odisha Sickle Cell Project.
“Apprehending that files could be encrypted due to WannaCry ransomeware virus attack, we have informed local police for further investigation and higher officials have been communicated,” Mr. Nayak said.
No ransom demand
According to sickle cell unit officials, computer screen showed files had been corrupted and could not open. The word ‘wncry’ in place of extension of files made authorities certain that it was WannaCry ransomeware virus attack. There was, however, no communication for ransom demand. Similar virus attack was reported from a government-run hospital at Kesinga in Kalahandi district.
