A major fire destroyed part of the 240 MW II hydro-electric project at Uri in north Kashmir on Thursday. The cause of the fire and the extent of damage are yet to be ascertained.

“The fire broke out at about 6 in the morning and the workers who were inside were rescued,” Deputy Commissioner Baramulla Farooq Ahmad Lone told The Hindu . Quoting the chief engineer, Mr. Lone said there were no casualties.

Inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in July this year, the Uri II hydro electric power project had the ability to generate about 1,124 million units of power annually.
