With a view to facilitating investments by Spanish companies, the Maharashtra government is planning to set up Spanish language departments in universities across the State, Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan said on Thursday.

He assured Spain’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation Jose Manuel Garcia-Margallo, who is leading a business delegation, of the setting up of Spanish-language departments that would help Spanish businesses secure a toehold in the State.

During their talks here, Mr. Chavan said 35 per cent of the foreign funds flowing into the country were invested in Maharashtra, and India’s financial capital welcomed Spanish assistance in the fields of telecommunications, power, construction and traffic regulation.

Mr. Garcia-Margallo promised Mr. Chavan Spanish expertise also in planning a high-speed railway in the State.

Later in the day, King of Spain Juan Carlos I met Governor K. Sankaranarayanan and Mr. Chavan for high tea at Raj Bhavan. The King is on a four-day state visit to India.
