A parallel government cannot be allowed to function in the country in the form of a Lokpal, Union Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal said on Friday.

Addressing a press conference here, he said: “Any government is accountable to its people and Parliament, whereas the Anna Hazare team wants unlimited powers [vested] in the Lokpal, without having any accountability. The Lokpal will not be accountable to anybody.”

“We have set a perfect example of democracy by accepting many demands of the Anna team, like empowering the Lokpal to investigate [corruption] and prosecute, conduct speedy trials and giving it financial powers. We also accepted that the Lokpal should be an independent institution.”

Mr. Sibal alleged that some people were diverting attention from core issues like education and health. Corruption was a national issue and not confined to a particular group.

He alleged that the Bharatiya Janata Party was behind Baba Ramdev's fast against corruption in New Delhi.

Answering a question about bringing back black money stashed away abroad, Mr. Sibal said: “It will take time. We have initiated the process with many countries to share information. We have initiated dialogue with many countries about tax information treaty and we are trying to track the route so that we can easily put a barrier. But we don't have a magic wand. So it requires more time.”

Sibal for making stringent anti-corruption law does not mean that the civil society members are trying to run parallel government.Whatever ailments present in our social system that can be removed only if we accept wholeheartedly that yes!this is the problem which is creating impediments in our forward march.Don't you think that it is the greatest drawback in our constitution which empower our elected[?]members to formulate the law for the nation without making any kind of consultation with the mass.Don't make it a matter of so called STATUS.Indian mythology says that good things should be accepted from anybody irrespective of its status.

Accountability??
What accountability this government is having for the people.
It is joke to use such a words by Kapil Sibal.
Accountability to the people by Governement in India is forgotten by Indian people long back.

I don't think Lokpal Panel ever said this. Lokpal wants to change the approach of the Govt and it wants people's participation in selecting the rulers. Coutry has woken up by the Anna's movement. Now the time has changed and one has to go with times.

It is surprising that a senior lawyer by profession like Kapil Sibal cannot find credible arguments to defend the government on accusations of corruption? Mr, Sibal's allegation that "some people were diverting attention from core issues like education and health" by talking about corruption and his claim that "corruption was a national issue and not confined to a particular group" will be taken by people as pure drivel.
