The Lok Sabha committee on petitions has summoned director Sanjay Leela Bhansali to appear before it on the controversy surrounding his film Padmavati , which is based on Malik Mohammad Jayasi’s epic Padmavat .
Chandra Prakash Joshi and Om Birla, BJP MPs in the Lok Sabha representing Chittorgarh and Kota-Bundi respectively, had written to the committee on November 20 that they apprehended a distortion of history as presented in the film and that it could hurt sentiments in their constituencies and the larger Rajput community.
The committee has also asked the Central Board of Film Certification and the Information and Broadcasting Ministry to put forward a report on the controversy surrounding the film. They have sought after the report by November 30. Officials from the CBFC and the I&B Ministry will also have to appear before the Parliamentary panel.
“The panel has referred the matter to the Information and Broadcasting Ministry and the censor board. It has also asked them to submit a report before November 30,” senior BJP leader Bhagat Singh Koshyari, who heads the panel, said.
