Alcohol has been prohibited in the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy (SVPNPA), Hyderabad.

An order to this effect was issued on Friday, a day after Indian Police Service (IPS) probationer Manu Mukt Manav drowned in the academy’s swimming pool.

The order signed by SVPNPA director Aruna Bahuguna says: “It is hereby ordered that no liquor will be served in the Officers Club of the SVP National Police Academy. It is also directed that, hereafter, no liquor will be served at any official function of the Academy.”

Manav, a 31-year-old Himachal Pradesh cadre officer from Haryana’s Hisar, was declared dead after being pulled out of a swimming pool near the Officer’s Club. The officer had jumped into the pool, fully clothed, after attending a party at the club. His post-mortem report is yet to be released by the Andhra Pradesh Forensic Sciences Laboratory.

Ms. Bahuguna was travelling and was not reachable when this report was filed. An internal probe has also been ordered into the incident, on the request of Mr. Manav’s parents.
