Left to protest rightward policy shift

January 03, 2015 03:09 am | Updated 03:09 am IST - NEW DELHI:

Ahead of U.S. President Barack Obama’s Republic Day visit, the Left parties plan to ratchet up protest against the “rightward” shift in Indian policy-making, reflected in the growing privatisation and communalism.

Nationwide protests are being planned for January 24 by the four Left parties, which have a longstanding alliance with the Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) and the Socialist Unity Centre of India (SUCI), as part of the ongoing effort to forge a broader left unity.

Plans for the protest were firmed up on Friday at a meeting between the leader of four of the six parties – the Communist Party of India (Marxist), CPI, CPI (ML) and SUCI.

A final call will be made on Saturday in consultation with the Forward Bloc and the Revolutionary Socialist Party.
