Lawyer withdraws petition seeking CBI probe

With the Supreme Court refusing an early hearing in a writ petition seeking a CBI probe into alleged proxy stakes of Minister of State for External Affairs Shashi Tharoor in the Kochi IPL, the petitioner withdrew it on Thursday.

Petitioner Ajay Agrawal, a lawyer, made a mention before a Bench of Justices S.H. Kapadia and Swatanter Kumar for early listing of the case in view of its importance. But when Justice Kapadia told the advocate that the matter would be listed in the normal course, Mr. Agrawal said he would withdraw the petition and file it before the appropriate High court.

The advocate, who filed the petition on April 13, had also sought a direction to constitute a special investigation team to probe the allegations against Mr. Tharoor that he had a proxy stake in the Kochi IPL.

Mr. Agrawal alleged that Mr. Tharoor used his official position to get the Kochi team to a consortium led by Rendezvous Sports World Ltd, a company in which, according to reports, Sunanda Pushkar had 19 per cent free stake.

Ms. Sunanda was the Minister's friend and he (the petitioner) had a reasonable apprehension that hawala and black money might have also played a big role in this Kochi IPL case.
