A woman advocate hit a policewoman with a slipper in the Bombay High Court on Friday, after arguments over frisking. The lawyer was arrested and remanded in judicial custody by the court.
Rohini Dandekar, who is in her mid-forties, was being checked when she entered into an argument with Jyoti Gaikwad (23). When the constable asked her whether she was carrying any metal objects, the advocate started arguing with her and hit her on her head with her slipper, Ravindra Shiswe, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone I), said.
He said the advocate would frequently argue with the police staff over the security checks.
“The constable did not say anything to the advocate. She went and complained to her senior who brought it to the notice of the court authorities,” Mr. Shiswe said.
Both women were given a hearing. The advocate claimed that she had not hit the constable and that her slipper slipped from her foot. When the authorities went through the CCTV footage on the cameras installed in the security room, they found that the advocate had indeed hit the constable.
Ms. Dandekar was taken to the Azad Maidan police station where she was booked under sections 332, 353, 504 and 506 of the Indian Penal Code. She was then produced before the court which declined to grant her bail. She was remanded in judicial custody till January 17.
