The Union Cabinet on Thursday gave its nod for a stand-alone legislation to protect waqf property from encroachment.

Christened ‘Waqf Properties (Eviction of Unauthorised Occupants) Bill 2013,’ the draft legislation has been prepared by the Minority Affairs Ministry in line with the recommendations of the Sachar Committee report on the social, economic and educational status of the Muslim community.

The government is hopeful of introducing the Bill in the next session of the Lok Sabha.

Waqf property nationwide is estimated to add up to six lakh acres.
