Union Textiles Minister K. Sambasiva Rao resigned from the Cabinet on Thursday to protest the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh.

Till late in the evening, there was no official word on whether his resignation was accepted.

The five-time member of the Lok Sabha, who represents Eluru, had picketed the well of the House in protest against the bifurcation.

Though Mr. Rao denied that he was planning to join the Bharatiya Janata Party, speculation was rife on such a possibility.
