Expressing grief over the death of the New Delhi physiotherapy student, a 37-year-old Kolkata woman who is also a victim of gang rape has expressed the hope that the outrage that followed the December 16 crime in the national capital will help her get justice.
“It is sad that the country needed such a tragedy to wake up to violence against women. She has given strength to every girl to fight for her rights,” the woman told The Hindu on the phone on Saturday.
“It has been 10 months since the incident occurred and the main accused is still at large. I hope that after seeing the [Delhi] outrage those who enforce law will not drag my case for another ten months,” she said.
The woman said she was gang-raped in a moving car in February.
Living in fear
The woman said she had been living in fear and that every time she stepped outside her home she relived the horror of the rape, and such incidents showed that women were not safe anywhere.
She welcomed West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s call for amendment of criminal laws to deal with crimes against women.
“I am very happy that she has made such a strong statement. I am hopeful that she will be compassionate in my case as well.”
Ms. Banerjee had said the rape of the woman in the Park Street area was “concocted to malign her government.”
