Koli back in Ghaziabad jail

September 18, 2014 12:31 am | Updated November 16, 2021 10:00 pm IST - Meerut:

Surinder Koli, death-row convict in the Nithari killings, was on Wednesday shifted to Dasna jail in Ghaziabad for security reasons.

He will remain there till his review petition is heard on October 29. S.H.M. Rizvi, Senior Superintendent in Meerut’s Chaudhary Charan Singh jail where Koli was hitherto lodged, told The Hindu that the convict was shifted at noon.

Koli had earlier been shifted from Dasna jail to the Meerut jail as the former lacked execution facilities. The Supreme Court stayed his hanging, which was scheduled for any day between September 7 and 12, till his review petition is heard.

According to Meerut jail officials, the shifting was done in view of the security provided to Koli.

“Koli was shifted for his hanging. We shifted him to the high security cell here after vacating it and shifting the others. But now that it has been stayed till October 29, we can’t afford to let the convicted criminals stay with others for so long. It can lead to gang wars,” said an official.
