The 23rd Kerala Science Congress, to be held at the Centre for Earth Science Studies (CESS) in Thiruvananthapuram from January 29 to 31, 2011, will place a major thrust on encouraging young scientists in the State.
They will get an opportunity to present papers in eleven subject areas. The best paper in each subject will receive the Young Scientist Award comprising a cash prize of Rs.25,000 and a plaque. The winners will also be entitled to an annual contingency grant of Rs.1 lakh each to continue their research for two years. The last date for submitting research papers is November 30, a press note issued on Monday said. The focal theme of the congress is ‘Science and technology for transforming Kerala into a green economy.'
According to the press note, the rapid changes in the relationship between society and nature warrant a forward-looking science policy. Efforts to protect the environment and manage resources sustainably require close collaboration between scientists, policymakers and stakeholders. The special session on science and technology issues in pursuing a green path will focus on the role of research and development in improving energy efficiency.
Presentation of research papers, invited talks, posters, and presentations by the State-level winners of Children's Science Congress are the other highlights. The technical sessions are grouped under 11 areas.
An exhibition on Science and Technology for Kerala's Development will be held. There will be three memorial lectures in honour of science and technology visionaries of the State, namely, P.T. Bhaskara Panicker, P.K. Gopalakrishnan and P.R. Pisharoty.
Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan is scheduled to inaugurate the Congress on January 29.
