Christmas season kicked off in the district jail with the Kollam Bishop Stanley Roman inaugurating the celebrations on Monday with the message that observing the festivity period in right earnest will bring solace to hearts troubled by captivity.

The Bishop said the mission of the birth and death of Jesus Christ was to liberate people from bondage.

Liberation

“All people want to be liberated from the bondages they experience, but in today’s situation liberation has confusing connotations,” he said.

Addressing the inmates at the jail, he said the occasion was not a mere function. “We have come here to express our feelings that all the inmates of the jail are in our hearts,” he said.

To the jail inmates he said: “you miss your near and dear ones and they too miss you. In such a situation when you see that people to who are strangers to you feeling concerned about you and pray for you, it brings much relief to your hearts and minds”.

Free spirit

He said that for whatever reasons the inmates feel they are kept confined; they should always keep their hearts liberated.

Having such a heart is a prized possession.

Painful

“Some of you could be individuals who should not have been here and their hearts will be the most painful,” the Bishop said

The programme was organised by the district jail authorities in association with the charity organisation Jesus Fraternity.
