KVASU headquarters work to resume in three months

A meeting of the Board of Management of the Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (KVASU) at Pookode has decided to resume the construction work on the university headquarters within three months

Vice Chancellor B. Ashok chaired the meeting on Wednesday .

The construction activities had come to halt following a stop memo issued by the southern regional office of the Union Ministry of Forests and Environment in November last.

Green tribunal order

The National Green Tribunal (NGT), Southern Zone, Chennai, had also issued an interim order in December restraining all construction activities of the university.

A green movement had approached the NGT saying that the university was in possession of 100 acres of land which was deemed reserved forest and set apart for assignment to the Scheduled Tribe community.

The State government had recently allocated Rs.4 crore to purchase five to 12 acres of land in Vythiri village in the district for taking up construction of the university buildings.

The meeting decided to identify and purchase adequate and feasible land to proceed with the construction of the academic complex and associated structures, Dr. Ashok told The Hindu after the meeting.

A minimum extent of 5 acres of non-forest and non-agricultural land having transport and electricity facilities and ample water availability within the Vithiri taluk limits would be considered for the purpose, he said.

Till April 30

Interested landowners could submit applications with details of the extent of land and other credentials of the land before April 30.

The meeting accepted the proposal for a Students’ Entrepreneurship programme which would offer 10 hours of part-time work to financially backward students to enable them to meet their educational expenses and earn at least Rs.2,000 a month.
