Beena, 32, of Puthenpurayil House at Vechoochira, near Ranni, who reportedly abducted a newborn from the District Hospital at Kozhencherry two days ago was produced before the Judicial First Class Magistrate II here on Saturday.

Magistrate Surya S. Sukumaran remanded her in judicial custody for 15 days, District Superintendent of Police B. Ashokan said.

The official told reporters that the name of the accused was Beena, not Leena, as informed by the police earlier.

The woman also confessed to the police that she abducted the four-day-old baby of Saji Chacko-Anitha couple of Madathumpady in Ranni from the District Hospital on Thursday forenoon.

The police traced the woman and rescued the baby from Vechoochira on Friday after tracing mobile phone signals received at the base transmission stations in Kozhenchery town on Wednesday and Thursday.

The accused also confessed that she camped at the hospital, pretending herself as a caregiver of a patient.
