The District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC), in association with the Niravu Residents Association, a Kozhikode-based organisation known for its creative interventions in waste management, is preparing to launch a Clean Wayanad project in the district from May 4.

The project aims at making all major tourism destinations in the district garbage-free. Eighteen pick-up points would be set up in various parts of the district, including 10 major tourism destinations, to collect solid waste from tourism destinations, resorts and home-stays after segregation, P.P. Praveen, DTPC, manager (marketing), said. All solid waste, except non-biodegradable ones, would be processed at the origin, for which bio-win plants would be set up in each pick-up points. The non-biodegradable waste will be collected by Niravu and transported to its recycling plant in Karnataka, Mr. Praveen added. The DTPC and Niravu had signed a memorandum of understanding for the purpose. The project would be launched on May 4.

The success story of Niravu in various parts of Kozhikode district is expected to be repeated in Wayanad too, he said.
