Rain, wind to continue for next 24 hours, fishermen told not to venture into sea

Two houses were destroyed and 10 damaged in Purakkad and Ambalappuzha panchayats after rough sea, triggered by cyclone Ockhi, battered the coastal areas of the district on Friday. In Arattupuzha, 26 families were shifted to relief camps. According to officials, a relief camp has been opened at Panchayat L.P. School and 125 people have been shifted there.

Fishermen said that 10 fishing boats anchored off Kattoor coast were washed away in strong waves early on the day. District Collector T.V. Anupama visited the coastal regions of Kattoor and Pollethai and took stock of the situation.

Light to moderate rain lashed the district for the second consecutive day. District administration has issued a fresh rain-and-wind alert for the next 24 hours in the district.

Authorities advised fishermen not to venture into the sea and urged tourists and people living along coastal areas to remain vigilant. They warned that waves as high as 3.3m are likely to hit the coastlines of the district.

In Kuttanad

On Thursday night, one house was destroyed in heavy rain and wind in Kuttanad taluk. The loss is pegged at ₹2 lakh. No loss of life has been reported in the district yet. The District Collector said that all village and panchayat offices in the district would function on Saturday and Sunday to coordinate relief work. The Collector has directed officials concerned to take all necessary precautions and put Disaster Management Authority on alert.

Five fishermen who went missing in the sea, from Chettikkad on Thusday remain untraced. Fourteen fishermen from Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam and Tamil Nadu have been rescued and brought to Kayamkulam, with the help of Coast Guard and Coastal Police.
