The water level in the Mullaperiyar dam receded to 141.56 ft on Saturday with Tamil Nadu increasing the discharge after the level reached 142 ft on Friday morning.
A Tamil Nadu Public Works Department official said the inflow was 770 cft per second while the discharge was 2,063 cft per second. Water, being released through the penstock and the Eraichipalam stream, was being stored at the Vaigai dam in Tamil Nadu.
Tamil Nadu had informed Kerala that it would not release water through the spillway shutters in normal circumstances. In case of heavy rainfall, the Idukki administration would be informed six hours in advance of releasing the water through the spillway shutters to the Periyar. An official of the Dam Monitoring and Research Station, Vazhathoppe, told The Hindu that the water level in the Idukki reservoir had been stagnant for the past two days. There was no rainfall in the catchment area of the reservoir on Saturday.
