Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) State general secretary K.P.A. Majeed lambasted Leader of the Opposition V.S. Achuthanandan here on Wednesday for his remarks about the party.
In a hurriedly convened press conference, Mr. Majeed said Mr. Achuthanandan had fallen into political depression.
‘‘Describing Mr. Achuthanandan as a superannuated leader, Mr. Majeed denied the Opposition leader’s allegations about the death of Abbas Sait, personal secretary to Industries Minister P.K. Kunhalikutty. He said the party would take legal action against Mr. Achuthanandan after consulting with the family of Abbas Sait.
Mr. Majeed also denied the charges levelled by Mr. Achuthanandan against party leaders E. Ahamed and Mr. Kunhalikutty. The Opposition leader had said that Mr. Kunhalikutty and Mr. Ahamed had been controlling the matters of the passport office in Malappuram.
“Everyone knows how Abbas Sait died. There is no doubt about the cause of the death even in his family. He died in a private hospital in Kozhikode after having suffered cerebral haemorrhage. There is nothing mysterious about it,” the IUML leader said.
Mr. Majeed challenged Mr. Achuthanandan to come up with any evidence to prove his charges. “The Opposition leader should display a little more accountability. He should not make such baseless allegations.”
The IUML leader said Mr. Achuthanandan’s allegations had sprung out of his dejection after the drubbing he suffered in the palmolein case. He also denied that the IUML was controlling the United Democratic Front.
Mr. Majeed, however, tried to evade the questions about the CBI (Central Bureau of Investigation) case against Malappuram Passport Officer K. Abdul Rasheed. He said the IUML had no role in any matters concerning the passport office.
“The issue is now in court. It is not fair on my part to comment about it now,” he said adding that the party had not got any complaint about the Passport Officer.
Mr. Majeed said there was nothing wrong in Mr. Rasheed, who had served as a gunman of Mr. Kunhalikutty, being appointed as the Passport Officer.
